Professor to head Alabama Cooperative Extension System

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) An Auburn University professor will take over March 1 as head of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, which assists the state’s agriculture industry and others.
Mike Phillips, who teaches agronomy and has served since 2018 as an assistant director for the system, will replace Gary Lemme, who retired after a decade as director the service.
Phillips, in a statement released by Auburn, said he was honored to be named to oversee the system.
“The opportunity to lead in making the state a better place is very special, and I am passionate about it. Our Extension professionals are here to enhance citizens’ livelihoods and make communities a better place to live and work,” he said.

Mike Phillips has been named director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the primary outreach organization for Alabama A&M and Auburn universities, both of which are land-grant institutions with the mission of providing real-life solutions and helping improve the lives of all Alabamians.
Phillips will begin his new role March 1 with the joint system referenced generally as Alabama Extension which was created in 1995 when the universities’ Extension programs were combined.

The Etowah County Extension Office and The Chamber of Gadsden & Etowah County will partner in April to host a series of Small Business Workshops.
The workshops are a four-part series led by Rick Zapata of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and co-hosted by The Chamber. The workshops will be held by Zoom video conference, but a hybrid option to attend the sessions in person at the Etowah County Extension Office is available.
The sessions will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 6, 8, 13 and 15.
Together, these workshops will help participants develop a full-fledged business plan.
• Session 1: Starting a Business from Scratch Selecting a product or service, business formation, business licenses, risk management.
