UNC Faculty Symposium on Deliberative Pedagogy
On May 6th, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the UNC Program for Public Discourse (PPD) hosts the UNC Faculty Symposium on Deliberative Pedagogy. All UNC faculty and staff are invited to attend.
The PPD aims to foster dialogue and debate at UNC, with the goal of increasing students’ capacities to be active participants in democratic processes. To that end, and to help faculty share ideas and refine their skills for fostering dialogue and debate, the PPD is hosting an array of panels and discussions on deliberative pedagogy.

When first approaching course design, Joseph Brown, adjunct instructor of music, was unsure if it was possible to teach a music course in an online format. A large part of his online “History of Rock I” course focuses on auditory learning, which initially proved challenging for him because he had to find ways for students to listen to songs constructively and legally. He was also worried about student engagement. Because his course fulfills a general education requirement, a majority of his students are nursing students who are working full time, and perhaps not particularly interested in music. “It’s always been a challenge for me to find ways to construct content in such a way that’s meaningful to students but also meets them where they are,” he said.
Place-Based Pedagogy
The following story is the first in a three-part series about projects currently being supported by the 2017 cycle of the Academic Innovation Accelerator. These projects already have made significant strides at OHIO. Each project is unique and made
possible by many different teams of University individuals working together.

Jerry Miller, professor and associate director of undergraduate studies in the School of Communication Studies, first came up with the idea to bring place-based education to Ohio University in May 2017. He traveled to the Teton Science Schools with the Ohio Fellows Program for a one-week communication and environmental leadership event in the Wyoming mountains.
