Employee pay raises, expanded public safety staffing highlight Fairfax County s newly adopted budget

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted a balanced budget for fiscal year 2022 yesterday (Tuesday). It includes some funding adjustments that the board incorporated into the proposed budget during the board’s markup session last week. The newly adopted budget supports a 1% pay increase for county employees, a 2% raise for Fairfax County Public Schools employees, and 15% salary supplements for staff in the Office of the Public Defender and state probation and parole officers. “While there were many constraints on this year’s budget, I am tremendously proud of what this Board was able to accomplish,” Board Chairman Jeff McKay said. “My goal was to look for balance in lowering the tax rate, with the understanding of skyrocketing property assessments, while also supporting our County employees and teachers and furthering our priorities in education, affordable housing, environmental protection, and community resources. I am pleased we were able to achieve that.”

Mother seeks compensation, answers on whereabouts of son detained in 2006 -

The mother of a man allegedly detained by the defunct Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in December 2006 is asking the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on SARS-related matters, for adequate compensation as she has been searching for him since then. The 80-year old witness while concluding her evidence on Tuesday, said her son, Abayomi Egbaiyeyomi was arrested two days after the christening of his son and that she has been handling the upkeep of the boy since his mother left him with her about seven years ago. Titi Agnes began her testimony in April on how police officers stopped her son on his way to work in December 2006. She said she last saw him days later in custody chained on both hands and legs.

Chief justice highlights new tech, policies in State of the Judiciary

Guam Supreme Court Chief Justice F. Philip Carbullido underscored the advances in technology usage and policy achieved by the Judiciary of Guam during the COVID-19 pandemic at the annual State of the Judiciary Address April 30.  According to Carbullido, dealing with the pandemic sped up the adoption of new methods and resources at the Judiciary. But challenges, primarily in the area of handling necessary in-person trials, are still ahead.  Here are some of the key takeaways from the chief justice s speech. Going virtual Many court services were forced to go online due to restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Given the positive results that were seen in some areas, many of the changes were likely to continue after the pandemic had ceased, Carbullido said. According to him, allowing virtual options to certain court services would usher in a new era of court access.
