Tulane University students, faculty and staff celebrated the new homes of the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life and the Center for Academic Equity last week with an open house. Both centers are now in Richardson Building on the Academic Quad of the uptown campus.
In 2019, the university announced that the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Gender and Sexual Diversity, along with Religious Life, would be renamed the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life. The center honors Carolyn Barber-Pierre, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and Intercultural Life, and a Tulane Trailblazer. The Trailblazers program is an ongoing initiative established by Tulane President Michael Fitts that celebrates the contributions of people from diverse backgrounds who have made a substantial and lasting impact at Tulane. EDHD graduating students want educators to be better equipped to offer their students a superior education
As roommates and close friends throughout their four years at Bowling Green State University, Kate Jefferson and Miriam Sado talked a lot whether it was serious conversations about their course work and the issues of the day, or casual chats about social functions outside the classroom.
But the two Spring 2021 graduates of the Inclusive Early Childhood Program decided in Fall 2019 that words needed to lead to action when the topic focused on new pathways to creating better teachers who, in turn, would foster an improved learning environment and, ultimately, better students.
Lenoir-Rhyne students and some faculty marched from Hickory City Hall to the university in protest of racism on Thursday.
The demonstration comes less than a week after former Lenoir-Rhyne basketball player Laney Fox published an open letter saying she was cut from the team for speaking up on racial justice.
Fox said other players who spoke up on social justice issues, including most of the Black players had either been cut or transferred as a result of the environment on the team.
Nakia Hooks, a Black basketball player who is transferring, said athletes were told they would have their scholarships substantially reduced or that they would not be brought back.
