Cover letter latest sticking point in Schenectady police board debate

Cover letter latest sticking point in Schenectady police board debate FacebookTwitterEmail SCHENECTADY – Council members are divided over whether the cover letter in a new information packet recently approved by the Civilian Police Review Board  should come from the city or the police department. The review board  recently voted 6-2 to approve a packet with the cover letter signed by Police Chief Eric Clifford. The paperwork also includes forms for a person wanting to file a complaint against a police officer Over the years, the board has battled public perception that it largely rubber stamps recommendations from the police department and has little to no power. The department s Office of Professional Standards looks into complaints before forwarding their recommendation to Clifford for his review before the matter is sent to the CPRB.

Mayor Lightfoot’s actions in the this case - and those taken by people who report to her - are shocking to some of us who expected different and better from her and her administration. The former head of COPA has very clearly shown - through her actions - that she doesn’t understand (unlikely) or care what the ‘A’ stands for. Supremely disappointed. This is her Laquan McDonald moment, and she’s failed miserably. I do agree that the police committed to a raid with faulty information that they could’ve found because the intended target was under electronic monitoring. They just barged into the house of an innocent woman and I hear she was left nude while they were in her home. Perhaps reasonable safeguards should be in place so that things like this won’t happen on a recurring basis.

Aurora officials believe civilian review board is a major step   The Aurora Police Department. Brian Hill | Staff Photographer, September 2018 Richard Irvin Posted12/14/2020 5:30 AM In late June, Mayor Richard Irvin promised Aurorans the city was going to improve relations between them and the police. Six months later, Irvin and other city officials are proud a civilian review board has been created; that police plan to wear body cameras; and that it is now easier for people to see data about complaints against police officers.   But critics say the review board will be useless as it is toothless. The purchase of cameras is behind schedule, and complaint information is limited.
