(Photo by Matt Martinez) A new program will pair 68 youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system with 23 mentors in an effort to curb violence, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and several community partners announced Wednesday. During a news conference at Sherman Park, Crowley expressed concerns about how arguments have escalated into violence, particularly after a violent 2020 that set a record for homicides in Milwaukee.

MCW Adds New Position

A new position, director of violence prevention policy and engagement, has been added to the CIC team to lead the development of the Division of Violence Prevention, focused on supporting the local, state, and national violence prevention movement. Subscribe Reggie Moore will fill this new role, effective May 3, 2021, following his past five years of service at the city of Milwaukee Health Department. This position is made possible by a strong investment from Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) Endowment to support the launch of the Wisconsin Violence Prevention Project (WVPP) through an 18-month development and planning process.

(Kimberly Paynter/WHYY) Several members of Philadelphia City Council want to see more funding for anti-violence programs in the next fiscal year and beyond, as the city says gun violence has become the leading cause of death among young Black and Latino men. Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration is proposing an additional $70 million for anti-violence efforts over the next five years. The money would be used to expand a pair of violence prevention programs, bolster the city’s blight remediation efforts, and launch a transitional jobs program, among other priorities.

Warren proposes Office of Neighborhood Safety

When Mayor Lovely Warren submits her budget proposal to Rochester City Council later this month, the spending plan will include funding for a new Office of Neighborhood Safety, which officials intend to serve as a hub for the city’s violence reduction initiatives. How much the city will invest in the office remains an open question, however. Much like other cities across the country, Rochester has seen a spike in violence over the past year. There have been 22 homicides in the city this year, with nearly three-quarters of those deaths the result of gun violence, according to the Rochester Police Department. The average age of victims is 32 years old and 13 of the 22 cases remain open.
