A new world class national environment watchdog is being launched to hold public authorities, including councils, to account on protecting the environment. Under plans set out by the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the new Interim Office for Environmental Protection will be set up in non-statutory shadow form from July on an interim basis, ahead of its formal establishment as part of the Environment Bill later this year. The body will be tasked with producing an independent assessment of progress in relation to the implementation of the government’s 25-year environment plan. It will also enforce new policies that will be enshrined in the Environment Bill, and receive complaints from members of the public about failures of public authorities to comply with environmental law.
