Having namedropped Tropico in the very last episode, I discovered two things this week: the happy fluke that it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the first game in the series, and that after years of waiting to use "serendipitous", it reads far too pompously to open an introduction with it. It's a perfect opportunity to bring up why I love the series, because that should counter-balance all the complaining I'm going to do. And I'm hinging it on this: I don't want Tropico 7. I want another Tropico 2.

Published 6 Apr, 2021 Each time I play weird and wonderful amnesiac detective RPG Disco Elysium, I fall in love with language all over again, and get properly jazzed up to spill some fancy words. In this case, I've played the new Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, an updated version of the game that has loads of new voice acting and even some new quests. So I’ll pop a cork in my impulse to use words like 'ekphrastic', at least a bit, because I imagine you’ve come here with one of two questions. Those are: "should I finally get around to playing The Large RPG?" or, if you’ve already played it loads, "is the Final Cut reason enough to do so again?" The colony-building management game was free on Epic way back in 2019 but if you missed it then, hey, here it is again. It's still a good game, and free is still a good price. While our Surviving Mars review at launch in March 2018 was a bit lukewarm, mere months later Alec Meer was impressed by how it felt after a few patches. He said, "Subtle changes have massively refreshed Surviving Mars - with the game feeling this much better after three months, I'm so excited to see what it's like after a year."

Published 22 Feb, 2021 Way back in 2007, Alec Meer (RPS in peace) played a promising RTS mod for Half-life 2. "It's a ton of fun to see the familiar in such a different and well-considered format," he said. "But it's very, very early, with a lot of work to go." And a whole lot of work it was - 13 years of it. But over the weekend, Lambda Wars finally launched in full, inviting players to explore the world of Half-life 2 from a new perspective (that is: a strategic top-down one). Lambda Wars is a free standalone mod set in the HL2 universe, and based off of the code for Valve's 2010 top-down shooter, Alien Swarm. It sees players take up the mantle of Resistance commander or Combine overlord in singleplayer, co-op and multiplayer modes, and swaps out the game's first-person battles for real-time strategy skirmishes.

Publishers Slitherine today anjnounced Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector, a new turn-based strategy take on Games Workshop's tabletop world of spacefascists. It will pit the Space Marines of the Blood Angels against the Tyranid hive mind, doubtless shouting catchy battle cries like "For the Emperor!" and "Hssskkkklllrrppppblbgrgle!" Battlesector is set after the Devastation Of Baal, when the Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan came calling at the Blood Angels homeworld then the newly-resurrected Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman popped over to give them a kicking. The 20-mission singleplayer campaign focuses on the Blood Angels fighting Tyranids on the moon Baal Secundus, while the xenos will become playable in the multiplayer and Skirmish modes.
