Trench Collapses West Of Taylorsville, Person Killed

A man was killed in a trench collapse in Alexander County Wednesday (May 19). At approximately 2 p.m., Alexander EMS and Ellendale First Responders were dispatched to Big D’s Diner on US 64-90 west of Taylorsville. A portion of a trench had collapsed and trapped a man. The man was removed from the trench but was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victim was reported to be a 37-year-old man. His name had not been released. The trench was part of a project to replace a large culvert in the parking lot of the business. Sheriff Chris Bowman said co-workers and first-responders did everything they could have to try to save the man. The investigation is continuing.
Man Arrested In Alexander County On Stolen Vehicle Charge

37-year-old Herman Eugene Williams of Statesville was arrested in Alexander County Wednesday (May 12) by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. He’s charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and misdemeanor driving while impaired. Williams was jailed in the Alexander County Detention Center under $3,000 secured bond. He remained in jail as of earlier today (May 13). A District Court appearance is scheduled for next Monday (May 17).
