Newspapers largely white, male architecture critics are a reflection of the structural inequalities of the built environment and are not equipped to deal with our current time of crisis, says Mimi Zeiger.
On 8 January, just days after insurrectionists stormed the Capitol, architecture critic Blair Kamin announced on Twitter that after nearly three decades he would step down from his role at the Chicago Tribune. Some, whose minds were previously reeling from the events in Washington, suddenly had a new fixation: who would replace him?
Kamin refrained from playing favourites, preferring to honour his Pulitzer-winning predecessor Paul Gapp, who served as the paper s architecture critic for 18 years. Carolina A. Miranda with the official beginning-of-the year essential arts news:
Peering into 2021
In recent days, I’ve been entertaining myself by reading the various
predictions for 2020 published at the beginning of last year. Writers, scholars, critics and self-described futurists forecast the rise of “statement doorknobs,”hot pants and “smart” eyewear, as well as the decline of social media (LOL) and a growing political apathy among young people (ROFL). No one foresaw a global pandemic cross-pollinated by intense protests in the name of Black lives. Go figure.
Times opinion columnist
Robin Abcarian, however, did pretty much nail 2020 when it came to electoral politics, rounding out her predictions dispatch with this observation: “Between now and the election, our long national nervous breakdown will continue.” Even post-election, the breakdown continues. In fact, just consider me broken down.

vergüenza ajena. Think of it as an inversion of the German term
schadenfreude, that gleeful sense of pleasure in someone else’s pain. The direct translation is “alien embarrassment,” but what it truly conveys is that feeling of mortification when you witness someone do something foolish. Unlike its German counterpart, it brings no joy.
