Albany Police use pepper-spray after police station door gets broken during protest

WHECTV Created: April 15, 2021 06:43 AM ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC/WNYT) Police in Albany say they used pepper spray on protesters during a demonstration Wednesday night, officers say the response came after a glass door to the police station was broken. The rally was over the police shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota. Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins told our sister station the majority of protestors were peaceful throughout most of the afternoon,  but a small group began throwing water bottles and other objects at officers later in the evening. Police estimated 50 to 60 people were at the protest, however, it’s unclear how many of them were pepper-sprayed.

Letter: Problems with Albany s LEAD reflect deeper societal issues

Letter: Problems with Albany s LEAD reflect deeper societal issues to the editor FacebookTwitterEmail FILE. Letter writer says, The usual framing is we just need better people in these offices and then these policies can get their due. But that all the officers need do is shrug and blame progressives for shortcomings in pursuing justice speaks of deeper problems with our society. (Lori Van Buren/Times Union)Lori Van Buren/Albany Times Union I’ve followed Albany politics for a solid decade now even run for mayor as a form of protest of the general culture of one-party rule. Namely, most of our institutions current managers do not care very much outside of required duties. Often, left-right politics frame the conflict between workers being policed and large property owners whose interests always come first since they have the money to invest in the economy or fund campaigns, nay the election system itself.

Common Councilors React To Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan s State Of The City Address

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan delivered her State of the City address Monday evening. Sheehan, a Democrat seeking a third term, acknowledged 2020 was a difficult year, mostly because of the pandemic. “We began 2020 with a renewed sense of purpose, expecting it to be a year of new investments in downtown Albany as part of our downtown revitalization initiative award. Continued blight reduction when we learned that we had won a million dollar grant program from the New York State Attorney General Tish James, and plans for new playgrounds across our city, including the groundbreaking of the new Albany Skyway. But in mid-March, we learned about the first two cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Albany County. Shortly after we saw a statewide shutdown of non-essential businesses and a significant reduction in the capacity of essential businesses.”
