(WVIR) - There’s overwhelming support in Albemarle County to keep an elementary school’s name. A community survey from January 12 to February 2, 2021, says just over 92% of the 458 area residents surveyed support keeping the name of Virginia L. Murray Elementary School. Virginia Lee Murray was the first Black supervisor of elementary education in the county. The elementary school originally only served Black students before becoming desegregated in 1965.

(WVIR) - Nearly a year after ending its school resource officer (SRO) program through the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD), Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) is putting together a new program to take its place. The county tells NBC29 that despite the ending of the SRO program - which came under fire last year - it still works with police on things like threat assessment and planning. However, these new officers will be completely separate from the police force. Additionally, they will be trained by and answering to the school district only.

In a letter sent to families Wednesday Jan. 27, Superintendent Matt Haas says the decision was based on more than two weeks of encouraging coronavirus trend data and discussions with the Blue Ridge Health District. Haas’ letter said Stage 3 provides in-person access to certain students in Grades 4-12 and offers a hybrid learning option, including two days per week of face-to-face instruction, for all students in Grades PK-3.
