St. Clair Memorial Hospital in Upper St. Clair, UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in Oakland have begun distributing the vaccine to health care workers.
Additionally, Washington Hospital in Washington also has the vaccine.
The four hospitals are among 22 additional hospitals that received 30,255 doses of the vaccine. Currently, 109 hospitals across the state have begun inoculating staff.
Subscribe These first doses of vaccine are being given specifically to health care workers through hospitals, Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said. Hospitals are making arrangements to implement these vaccinations, not only to their own frontline staff but to other high-priority recipients. All 14 hospitals in Allegheny County that were slated to receive shipments of the coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech have gotten their deliveries according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The vaccine s arrival comes not a moment too soon.
Many hospitals throughout the region and county are struggling to staff facilities because so many health care workers have been exposed to, or fallen ill with, the virus.
“By stabilizing our workforce and making sure that they’re able to come to work…it means our hospitals will be able to stay open, treat COVID patients, and importantly non-COVID patients as well,” said Dr. Brian Parker, Allegheny Health Network’s chief quality officer.
It was a happy moment for exhausted frontline workers who have treated ill COVID-19 patients since March.
âItâs been a really long nine months for caregivers and nurses on the frontline. Theyâve valiantly fought this pandemic and they know there is more to come,â said Dr. Claire Zangerle, AHN chief nurse executive. âItâs taken an emotional toll, but they continue to show up every day.â
AHN received a shipment of 9,750 doses earlier this week.
The network plans to first vaccinate health care workers who provide direct care to COVID-19 patients, including those who work in emergency department and inpatient units.
