COVID-19 vaccines coming soon to physicians

As the state COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues, the drugs will be going to physician offices as another way to convince the public they are safe, Gov. Tom Wolf said Wednesday. The state also plans to make the vaccines available for distribution at more local pharmacies to make them easier for people to find, Wolf said Wednesday at a rural clinic in Bradford County. New COVID-19 cases continue to increase while the state experiences a vaccination hesitation problem, Wolf said during the live broadcast press conference. As of Wednesday, 26.5% of Pennsylvania adults have been fully vaccinated, he said. That number needs to be between 65% and 70% to achieve herd immunity, Wolf added.

Rabid bat bites child; other kids might have handled it April 22, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail PITCAIRN, Pa. (AP) A rabid bat bit one child, and health officials on Thursday urged the parents of three other children who might have handled the bat to seek medical attention for them. The animal was captured on Monday in Pitcairn, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, and a resident brought it to the Allegheny County Health Department for testing the following day. The bat tested positive for rabies, according to county health officials. At least one child was bitten by the bat, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Health Department said its investigation revealed that several children might have passed the bat around, or been bitten by it. Health officials contacted the parents of three children and said that any other parents who believe their child encountered the bat should call the Health Department immediately.

Pittsburgh s Air Improving, But Still Gets An F From American Lung Association

Allegheny Front Despite improvements to air quality in recent years, the Pittsburgh region still has some of the worst air pollution in the country, according to the National Lung Association’s latest “State of the Air” report. Pittsburgh’s air showed improvement, but it still got an F in ozone and particulate matter and ranked 9th worst in the country for long-term particle pollution, which is associated with heart and lung disease. “The area improved for a second straight year for all three measures that we looked at, and that clearly is progress in the right direction,” said Kevin Stewart, director of environmental health for the American Lung Association.
