Allegheny County’s coronavirus case total grew by 830 on Wednesday, putting the county on pace to reach 50,000 later this week.
At its current pace after averaging 819 cases per day over the past week the county’s total will hit 50,000 on Christmas Day. Only Philadelphia has reached that total, crossing 50,000 on Nov. 17. It now has 82,788 cases.
The new cases bring the county’s total to 48,738, according to the Allegheny County Health Department. The new cases 621 confirmed and 209 probable stem from 2,224 new PCR tests.

Four Allegheny County restaurants were ordered to close Tuesday for violating Gov. Tom Wolf’s latest covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
As of Wednesday morning, none of them had shut their doors.
David’s Diner in Springdale Township, Al’s Café in Bethel Park, Gianna Via’s in Whitehall and Il Pizzaiolo in Mt. Lebanon were each cited by the Allegheny County Health Department for offering indoor dining and ordered to shut down completely for seven days.
Of the new covid deaths reported, one person was in their 50s, six people in their 80s, and three in their 90s. Three deaths were associated with long-term care facilities. Dates of death range from Dec. 15 to Sunday.
Tuesday’s new cases range in age from 1 to 98, with a median age of 38. The largest demographic of new cases is the 24-49 age group, with 361 cases. Dates of positive tests range from Nov. 30 to Monday. Six positive tests are more than a week old, the Allegheny County Health Department noted.
As of Tuesday in the county, there are 806 covid-19 patients hospitalized, with 218 in the ICU and 119 on ventilators, according to state Department of Health data. There are 62 ICU and 544 medical/surgical beds available, per the DOH covid-19 dashboard. Those numbers reflect 10% of total ICU beds and 15% of total medical/surgical beds.
