A bat with rabies bit one child and might have been handled by several others in Pitcairn earlier this week, prompting a warning from the Allegheny County Health Department.
The bat was captured Monday near Second Street at Center Avenue. A resident brought it to the health department for testing, spokesman Chris Togneri said. Before that, however, the bat bit one child and was passed around and handled by several others.
The department determined the bat was positive for rabies on Wednesday. The bitten child was taken to the hospital for rabies treatment, which involves a number of shots that must be given before symptoms appear.
Fayette County added three, while Beaver, Butler and Washington had one apiece.
Long-term care facilities and nursing homes have accounted 13,054 covid deaths, which is more than 50% of the state’s total. Montgomery County has the most with 1,091, followed by Allegheny (1,023), Delaware (837), Philadelphia (836) and Bucks (692).
Hospitalizations
Covid hospitalizations in the state reached the highest point in more than two months on Wednesday, with 2,842. It’s the highest daily total since 2,890 were hospitalized on Feb. 9. It’s also nearly double of the state’s lowest point, when there were only 1,433 covid patients hospitalized on March 14.
Allegheny County covid hospitalizations increased by nine to 290, with 82 people in ICUs and 40 needing ventilators. At a recent appearance at a vaccine clinic in McKeesport, Gov. Tom Wolf said he hoped that Pennsylvania adults who want to receive a coronavirus vaccine will have received at least one shot by the second week of May.
That comes as Pennsylvania has opened vaccine eligibility for individuals who work in manufacturing, public transit and other areas, and is due to open it next week for people who work in banking, housing construction, the media and other professions. All adults in Pennsylvania and across the country will be eligible April 19.
When vaccines first became available in the state in January, some websites crashed thanks to the number of people trying to land an extremely limited number of appointments. Wolf said he hopes that does not happen again.

Allegheny County Seeks to Reassure Residents about Vaccine’s Safety
More than half of the county s adult population is partially vaccinated but the number of COVID-related hospitalizations is still rising.

Now that supplies of the COVID-19 vaccine are more plentiful in Allegheny County, the next challenge for officials is convincing people who are hesitant to get the shot.
“The fewer people that get vaccinated, the longer this virus will linger in our lives and the best way to defeat this virus is to continue the vaccine rollout as fast as possible,” said Allegheny County Health Dr. Debra Bogen at a briefing Wednesday. Bogen’s appeal comes after the CDC recommended a pause in the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after six women developed blood clots within two weeks of receiving the shots. Approximately 6.8 million people have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
