As Americans retreated into their homes to wait out the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, it became apparent that many households weren’t ready for one aspect of working or learning from home: How much they’d need to use the internet.
For many families, the cost of getting online is a major barrier to internet access. Though broadband internet prices have gone down in recent years, high-speed service can still cost at least $45 per month, according to a study by the United States Telecom Association, which represents internet service providers. Half of people who didn’t have broadband service in 2019 blamed the cost, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.

Heinrich Encourages Eligible New Mexicans To Apply For Broadband, Technology Assistance Through FCC Program

WASHINGTON D.C. U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is encouraging eligible New Mexicans and Tribal residents to apply for consumer discounts through the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for families and students in New Mexico,” Heinrich said. “We must ensure all New Mexicans have access to broadband services and this FCC program is a great way to help eligible applicants pay for the services they need. I will continue fighting to ensure every family and child in New Mexico, no matter where they live or go to school, has the digital capabilities and resources they need to succeed in the 21st century.”
