Hastings Prince Edward Public Health officials are stressing the importance of safe sex with local gonorrhea rates continuing to climb.
The health unit declared a gonorrhea outbreak back in June 2020, and it continues to experience an unprecedented amount of cases, with a 200 percent increase in 2020 compared to the previous 5-year average.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza says from 2015-2019, the health unit averaged 39 cases per year.
He says in comparison, there were 79 cases last year, and 25 in the first 4 months of 2021 alone.
“There is an ongoing transmission of sexually transmitted infections which is happening and has resulted in these increased rates,” Dr. Oglaza said.
OTTAWA Ottawa Public Health is reporting 143 more people in Ottawa have tested positive for COVID-19 and two more people have died. According to OPH s COVID-19 dashboard, there have been 25,363 total laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa since the first case was confirmed on March 11, 2020 and 523 residents have died. The daily case count Sunday was slightly higher than the 112 cases reported on Saturday, but weekly monitoring trends continue to see a downward decline, with the incidence rate per 100,000 population below 90. The estimated reproduction number, which measures how many additional people each person with COVID-19 infects, has been below 1 since the middle of April, which suggests that the spread of the virus is slowing down.

Hospital staff are treating 17 people with the virus, with six in ICU and six on a ventilator.
The seven outbreaks continue in the area.
A total of 20 cases have been linked to the outbreak at Belleville General Hospital’s Quinte 5 Unit. Another three cases have been linked to the outbreak in the hospital’s ICU.
Health officials have administered 65,730 vaccine doses, with 36 per cent of the population now with their first dose.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit added two more COVID-19 cases in Northumberland County, to their list today. There are a total of 24 active cases in the county.

Opioid-related deaths increased by more than 30 per cent in Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington in 2020, and by 60 per cent across the province.
According to a report from the Office of the Chief Coroner obtained by the London Free Press, opioid-related deaths have increased in Ontario from 1,516 in 2019 to 2,426 in 2020.
