What does ‘old age’ as a cause of death actually mean?
‘Old age’ is an acceptable cause if the deceased is “personally cared for the deceased over a long period and has observed a gradual decline in his general health”, according to guidance given to doctors completing certificates of cause of death in England and Wales.

Prince Philip died ‘peacefully’ at the remarkable age of 99 last month having recently returned home from hospital.
Now the UK media are reporting they have seen his death certificate which gives a simple explanation for his passing- ‘old age’.
It was certified by Sir Huw Thomas, head of the royal medical household The Daily Telegraph , who obtained the cert, report.
The description ‘old age’ can be used if the patient is over 80 and if the doctor has personally cared for the patient for a long period, observing a gradual decline.
