Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth who played a leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace said on Friday. The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially known, had been by his wife s side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, during which time he earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes. London, Apr 9 (EFE).- Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, has passed away, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” a statement said.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
Prince Philip, who was the longest-serving royal consort in British history, was 99. He died two months shy of his 100th birthday.
He had recently spent a month in hospital and was released on March 16 after undergoing surgery for a pre-existing heart condition. That was the last time he was seen in public.
