LONDON (Reuters) -Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth and a leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.
The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially known, had been by his wife’s side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, during which time he earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said in a statement.

London: Queen Elizabeth II s husband Prince Philip passed away on Friday at the Windsor Castle at the age of 99. He was recently hospitalised and underwent a successful heart procedure. It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
The statement added, His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Britain s Duke of Edinburgh - Prince Philip - has died.
He was 99-years-old.
The Duke and the Queen were married for more than 70 years - he officially retired in 2017.

In a statement released this afternoon, a spokesperson said: It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England, is dead.
The Buckingham Palace announced this in a statement on Friday, saying he died at the age of 99.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course,” the statement read.
The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen,.
