The Duke of Edinburgh Award was hailed Prince Philip s greatest legacy as his patronages paid tribute to his decades of dedicated service today.
Adventurer Sir David Hempleman-Adams praised the prize, which has benefited 6.7 million participants since it was founded by Prince Philip in 1956.
The 64-year-old, who completed the bronze, silver and gold awards as a teenager, said: I personally think so because it influenced me in such a powerful way at such an early age. It s done the same thing for millions of people around the world.
It comes as the Duke of Edinburgh s patronages including Shakespeare s Globe and The Scouts paid tribute to him hours after his death.

The news of his death was announced in a statement on Twitter by Royal Family on behalf of the Queen. It said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” It has now been confirmed Prince Philip will lie in rest at Windsor Castle in line with his wishes following his funeral which will be at St George’s chapel at Windsor Castle.
June 10, 1921: Prince Philip, the only son and fifth child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, is born in Corfu. He was styled Prince of Greece and Denmark.
1922: After a coup, Prince Andrew is banished from Greece and Prince Philip s uncle, King George V, orders a Royal Navy ship to collect them. The young Prince was carried to safety in a cot made from an orange box. The family relocates to Paris.

1928: Prince Philip moved to England to live with his Mountbatten relatives and attends Cheam school in Surrey.
1931: By the age of ten, Philip was separated from every member of his immediate family. His mother had been committed to a psychiatric unit and his father moved to the south of France.

Though the Royal Family has only just announced Prince Philip s passing, funeral plans for the Duke of Edinburgh are reportedly already underway. Queen Elizabeth has already entered an eight-day period of mourning, according to People. This means the monarch will not partake in any of her royal duties for the next week. The outlet also reports that all affairs of state will also be put on pause during this time of mourning.
