On Tuesday, Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce assured parents that spring break will not be postponed again, but given that Premier Doug Ford sounded far less convincing a day earlier, saying he “doesn’t want to predict two weeks out,” can the minister really be believed? If one thing is certain in this pandemic, it’s that nothing is certain.
There has been a lot of talk this week of cancelling spring break, which was originally scheduled for March 15 and then moved to April 12, due to concerns that families will travel or mingle with people outside their households, causing an increase in infections. But the issue is being complicated by teachers unions pushing for both a spring break and for schools to go virtual afterwards, showing that they care more about their holidays than the welfare of their students.
