Racism allegations point to systemic flaws in union, says president

As one who never shies away from difficult conversations, I welcome the CBC reports, wrote Thomas in the letter. Posted: May 07, 2021 4:00 AM ET | Last Updated: May 7 Annette Bouzi says OPSEU s head office did absolutely nothing to support her when she complained about sexist and racist treatment within her union local at Algonquin College.(Ashley Burke/CBC) Deep systemic flaws within one of Ontario s largest unions have allowed sexist and racist behaviour to go unpunished for months, sometimes even years, according to current and former union members and social justice advocates.  Annette Bouzi, a law professor and the first Black woman to be elected president of the faculty union at Algonquin College in Ottawa,  Bouzi launched a complaint against the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) with the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal in February, alleging the union failed to protect her.

Rainbow District School Board and OPSEU Local 614 ratify collective agreement

SHARE ON: Rainbow District School Board and the union representing Educational Assistants and Communicative Disorder Assistants in Sudbury, Massey, Espanola, and Manitoulin Island have reached a tentative agreement. Photo provided by RDSB Rainbow District School Board and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 614 both have a new collective agreement. The union represents approximately 280 Educational Assistants and Communicative Disorder Assistants in Rainbow Schools in full, part and casual positions. In the joint statement, the union members voted 85.6% in favour of accepting the deal with board members ratifying it at their April meeting. The contract is retroactive to September 1st, 2019 and expires August 31st of next year with the members receiving appropriate retroactive pay adjustments.
