Civil rights activist Andrew Young recalls time in St Augustine

Crossing St. Augustine During a rally led by Hosea Williams at First Baptist Church, Young was invited to lead a march that night. Although it strayed from Young’s original purpose for his visit, he agreed. “King was afraid violence would break out,” Young said. His plan was to have the demonstrators wait while he crossed the street and attempted to reason with the angry crowd that had gathered in the plaza. It seemed to be working until someone hit him and knocked him down. “That was all I knew,” Young said noting that he didn’t remember much of the attack after that.
