Shakespeare s birthday celebrated at Painted Room in his favourite Oxford inn

But with social distancing measures still in place, celebrations have once again, been ‘virtual’. Members of Oxford Preservation Trust had the rare honour of toasting him in one of his former haunts – the Painted Room in Cornmarket. The room, above a phone shop and bookmakers, is is all that remains of the 13th century Crown Tavern of which Shakespeare’s friend, John Davenant, was innkeeper.

The Church of the Holy Family at Cuddeson Way, Blackbird Leys, could be demolished and replaced with a new church, a community centre, and 21 homes and flats. The church, built in a heart-shaped with a rare example of a hyperbolic paraboloid roof made from timber, is considered an architectural gem by some, who have objected to its demolition. But the trustees of the church have said the costs of maintaining the current building are prohibitive, as the roof is leaking and floors are sloping.
