Public schools in Detroit will re-open for in-person learning in the fall, following an agreement with the city’s teachers’ union.
Detroit Public Schools Community District announced on Monday that it had established terms with the Detroit Federation of Teachers which “recognizes the need to return” to the classroom for all school staff, including teachers.
“This agreement signals that we are all on the same page to restart our reform efforts that had great momentum before the pandemic,” Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said in a statement.
Teachers will receive $2,000 in hazard pay for returning to classrooms, and another $2,000 if they teach in-person and remote learners simultaneously in what is often called “blended learning.” Additionally, the agreement requires that a committee that represents both the union and the administration will review safety concerns and COVID-19 infection-related information and recommend updates

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is offering a one-time $500 incentive to encourage educators and other eligible staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The incentive, which applies to those who already have been vaccinated or plan to be by June 30, 2021, also includes up to 16 hours of sick leave to account for possible vaccine side effects.
“This incentive is a way to promote the greatest protections to all employees as we work to minimize the threat of COVID-19 while respecting an individual’s choice not to vaccinate,” Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said in a statement.

Detroit schools resume in-person learning March 8

FARMINGTON, Mich. - Detroit schools will offer in-person learning to students beginning March 8, almost five months since the district went entirely remote.

DPSCD is the state s largest district, however, they have yet to offer some form of classroom learning.
The Detroit superintendent said the decision to reopen their learning centers was based on a low infection rate and the increasing availability of vaccines to teachers.
