Ottawa County: Court orders expungement hearing in bomb threat case Published by news@presspubli. on Fri, 04/16/2021 - 4:00pm By:  Larry Limpf A man convicted of inducing panic by making telephone threats to schools in 2014 will have his request to have the convictions expunged from his record heard by the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court. The Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals has ruled the common pleas court must schedule a hearing to determine if Charles Tingler is eligible for expungement and if so, whether he is entitled to expungement. In March 2015, Tingler was found guilty of two counts of inducing panic, which are second degree felonies; one count of disrupting public services, a fourth degree felony, and one count of aggravated menacing, a first degree misdemeanor.

Court upholds 9-year sentence of man involved in 2018 theft spree

TOLEDO - Ohio’s Sixth District Court of Appeals upheld the sentence of a former Fremont man serving nearly a decade in prison for multiple felony offenses stemming from a series of break-ins and thefts throughout Ottawa County in 2018.  Steven Rider, 27, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of burglary, a second-degree felony, and two counts of attempted burglary, third-degree felonies, in Ottawa County Common Pleas Court in 2019.  Rider, along with three others, two of whom were juveniles at the time, were accused of entering more than 20 properties, primarily trailers, campers and homes, between Portage and Catawba Island Township, where they stole items and vandalized the interior of many of those residences in 2018. 

Man sentenced to 15 years for 100 child porn charges

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Feb. 24 after pleading guilty in October. According to a news release from the Ottawa County Sheriff s Office, a joint investigation by the sheriff s office and the Catawba Island Police Department into a person in possession of child pornography began in August 2019.  The investigation later led to search warrants for two residential Ottawa County properties owned by Smith, one in Catawba Island Township and one in Erie Township, in September.  According to the news release, investigators found a large amount of child pornography after reviewing computers, USB drives and other evidence.  Smith was ordered by Judge Bruce Winters of Ottawa County Common Pleas Court to register as a Tier 2 sex offender and is subject to five years of post-prison release control as part of his sentencing.

Suit against former mayor dismissed Published by news@presspubli. on Fri, 01/08/2021 - 4:00pm By:  Suit against former mayor dismissed A federal judge has dismissed claims against the Village of Elmore and former mayor Matt Damschroder filed by John Kaylor, a resident who alleged Damschroder attacked him. Judge James R. Knepp, of the U.S. Court for the Northern District of Ohio, granted the motion filed by the village to dismiss claims against it and also dismissed claims against Damschroder. The judge declined to exercise supplemental jurisdiction over claims by Kaylor involving state law and remanded them to the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court where the case began.
