That’s Rich! I’m researching available rewards cards, and intend to apply for several, one at a time, about once a month or so. Whatever advice, input, or referral you could give to these ends would be greatly appreciated - Debra, Berea

CLEVELAND, Ohio - If you’ve been intentionally carrying a balance on your credit cards with hope of improving your credit score, you just may be making an expensive decision without getting any closer to your goal.
Count the balance-carry strategy as a giant myth, says Howard Dvorkin, chairman of the personal finance website debt.com.
“There are so many myths out there. And people invent new ones,” Dvorkin said during a recent telephone interview. “The No. 1 myth is the stupidest myth: ‘I should carry a balance on my credit cards so it shows activity.’ That is not going to help you. In the 1960’s, a popular notion was the idea of “finding yourself.” These days, with the prevalence of identity theft, it’s safe to say that even if you are unable to find yourself, someone else might!
Consider the numbers. In our country with more than 300 million people, over a billion records containing personal information are leaked each year. With this fact in mind, it shouldn’t be too surprising that identity theft is the No. 1 consumer complaint received by the Federal Trade Commission. While the inconvenience from identity theft is bad enough, the potential financial losses and damage to your credit rating add insult to injury.
