Retired Iowa state trooper in Le Mars is part of RAGBRAI history

Nearly half a century later, the number of people who were around for the early days of RAGBRAI is starting to dwindle. One of the founders, former Des Moines Register columnist Donald Kaul, died in 2018. But on Saturday, as the 48th edition of the Register s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa prepared for Sunday s departure from Le Mars, one person who witnessed the original ride was on hand. As the ride got underway on Aug. 26, 1973, Iowa State Patrol Trooper, William Wruck escorted the riders  a few hundred as compared to the current ride s more than 15,000   out of Woodbury County, where they had started in Sioux City, and into Plymouth County.

RAGBRAI: Le Mars hosts up to 20,000 as ride returns after pandemic

Le Mars  Jim Green loved ice cream. So it was appropriate that on Saturday, as riders on the Register s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa gathered in Le Mars for Sunday s launch of the ride s 48th edition, a memorial to the late, longtime director of the world s largest annual bicycle ride was dedicated in the northwest Iowa city that claims to be the Ice Cream Capital of the World. The Wells Visitor Center & Ice Cream Parlor in the heart of downtown, where the ceremony took place, represents the history of family-owned Wells Enterprises and its most famous product, Blue Bunny Ice Cream, made in a sprawling plant on the city s south side.
