An Onslow County mother says a local elementary school is not doing enough to address a recent incident of alleged bullying involving her son, and that the school also failed to report it to her initially.
Katie Steffne claims her son, Cameron Moore, who attends Stateside Elementary School in Jacksonville as a 5th-grader, came home from school on Tuesday, May 4, with cuts on his head, swelling around his knee, and minor scrapes on his shoulder.
When asked what happened her son explained he had been jumped by a group of seven girls during that morning s recess. Jumped is slang for being assaulted.
Their decision, a man born and raised in Onslow County with decades of experience in law enforcement.
Donnie Worrell began his career with the Onslow County Sheriff s Office in 1989 and worked as a lead investigator until 2012. After a brief stint with Jacksonville PD, Worrell was brought back to the OCSO when Sheriff Hans Miller was elected in 2014. He officially retired in 2019 and has since enjoyed time with his family and traveling around the country.
He is now stepping back into a familiar realm, taking over as the new chairman of Crime Stoppers in Onslow. Altogether, Worrell has spent a total of 35 years in law enforcement and is excited to continue the work his predecessor has built.
A man who is currently on probation in Duplin County for felony possession of a gun, and was arrested in March by Onslow County deputies for drugs, was arrested again this week accused of trafficking methamphetamine.
Justin Tyshaun Pickett, 29, was arrested on Thursday by Onslow County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit at the conclusion of an investigation in which he was found to be selling trafficking amounts of methamphetamine.
He was taken before a magistrate and charged with five counts of felony trafficking in methamphetamine, felony possession with intent to manufacture/sell/distribute methamphetamine, felony sell methamphetamine, felony deliver methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Authorities seeking information on cold case
A breaking and entering call resulted in the Onslow County Sheriff s Office discovering property, a burned vehicle and the body of the property owner.
Accoridng to a post on their Facebook page, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information concerning the death of Gary Morton, of Weatherington Road, located off Old 30 Road. On December 8, 2016, deputies responded to a report of a breaking and entering at Mr. Morton’s residence and that Mr. Morton was missing.
While this report was being taken, deputies responded to a call for service where neighbors stated they saw two individuals going into an abandoned residence located at Cypress Court (Gum Branch area). Deputies responded and a search of the abandoned residence was conducted, where it was discovered that property belonging to Morton was located inside.
During the trial of Derek Chauvin, prosecutors continued to refer back to the amount of time the former police officer held his knee on George Floyd s neck, saying almost 9 minutes is too long . What wasn t long is the amount of time it took the jury to find Chauvin guilty on all three counts.
Chauvin, 45, was found guilty of second-and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd s death Tuesday afternoon.
Over 1,000 miles away in Onslow County, the impact was felt immediately. A few days after news of Floyd s death broke, protestors gathered at the corner of Western Boulevard and Highway 17. That sunny Sunday afternoon saw hundreds denounce Floyd s death and other forms of racism in the country, including police brutality.
