Dungeness crab fishing season ends four weeks early

Commercial Dungeness Crab Update | Outdoor News Daily

Commercial Dungeness Crab Update The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) completed the most recent marine life entanglement risk assessment under the Risk Assessment Mitigation Program (RAMP). Recent survey data indicate Humpback whales have begun to return from their winter breeding grounds to northern California fishing grounds. Humpback and Blue whales have also been sighted further offshore in central California but primarily outside the fishing grounds. As a result, CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham has issued a depth constraint of 30 fathoms for Fishing Zones 1 and 2 (Oregon state line to the Sonoma/Mendocino county line). Constraining the fishery to fishing grounds shoreward of 30 fathoms will help minimize entanglement risk in Fishing Zones 1 and 2.

New regulations delay 2020-21 Dungeness crab season

On Dec. 14, 2020, longtime local fisherman Bill Blue sat next to his boat, Brita Michelle, on the dock in Morro Bay. The fishing season for Dungeness crab had been delayed due to low meat quality and was slated to open on Dec. 23. It s just lost days in the ocean so it affects everybody s business. People are used to having crabs in November for Christmas, and it gives a chance for the market to get established and for prices to settle out, he said. Like many other fishermen, Blue doesn t just fish for one kind of seafood. He fishes for black cod and Dungeness crab with a small team himself and two other men.
