APPLETON - Bird electric scooters are coming to Appleton, the hometown of the company s founder and CEO, Travis VanderZanden, a 1997 graduate of Appleton North High School. The Common Council voted 14-0 Wednesday to proceed with a pilot program that will deploy 100 Bird scooters for rent throughout the city starting this spring. Appleton Area School District electors will find the following candidates on their April 6 general election ballots: Incumbent Kay Eggert and challengers Sheri Hartzheim, Amber McGinley and Edward Ruffolo. Plus, Emily Grover had filed as a registered write-in candidate. Ruffolo was to appear on the ballot as an incumbent after the school board in January appointed him to fill the vacant seat left by Leah Olson through the end of her term in April. Days later, though, he withdrew his application for the opening after coming under fire for following several Facebook pages featuring scantily clad models. It was too late to withdraw his name from the April ballot, but Ruffolo told The Post-Crescent he wouldn t actively campaign.
