SANTA ANA, CA Promising developments in the battle against the coronavirus continued in Orange County Friday as the COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations dropped further, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lifted the pause on use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
The federal government s decision to allow the vaccine to be used again is expected to help speed up the drive to innoculate residents as quickly as possible. Use of the vaccine was paused earlier this month, while scientists reviewed cases in which dangerous blood-clotting occurred in 15 people out of about 7 million doses administered nationwide. The vaccine can be administered again with a warning regarding the risk.
That s great, Orange County CEO Frank Kim said of the hospitalization rates. It really gives me hope. It really does.
In another sign of the improving situation, Kim said he would recommend to the Orange County Board of Supervisors at Tuesday s meeting that it is time for him to relinquish his authority to sign emergency contracts without board approval. There s really no reason to have delegated authority anymore and I ve asked the board to terminate that, Kim said. It s a stable operation now and the contracts we needed have been implemented.
Kim said it was an awesome responsibility to spend taxpayer funds, but there should be public view of those types of transactions.
