Calleros is also accused of using another officer s identification to report the stolen pickup truck was recovered, prosecutors said.
Calleros allegedly checked a state law enforcement system to run the vehicle s license plate as well as a license plate belonging to a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado that he placed on the 2015 pickup truck, prosecutors said.
Thanks to an anonymous tip, detectives in Orange were led to Calleros as a suspect, said Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department. The dealer had written it off, McMullin said.
Calleros, who would drive the allegedly stolen vehicle to work, was arrested on Nov. 9 at the Hollenbeck Division of the LAPD, prosecutors said. The Chevrolet Silverado was parked there at the time.
Three Men Arrested in Connection with Suspected Gang Killing
“Obviously we have a gang problem,” said Santa Ana Police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bertagna.
“In any shooting, especially when people are driving down the road and people are shooting, [there’s] a concern that innocent bystanders can get hit.”
The latest killing happened Feb. 6, where police said Nick Torres was shot dead at Bear Street and MacArthur Boulevard about 9:12 p.m. A female passenger in his BMW was uninjured.
According to a police report, a witness saw a green SUV traveling eastbound on MacArthur Boulevard accelerate next to the gray BMW, and heard three to five gunshots before watching the green SUV drive away.

Nashville Metropolitan Police in Tennessee said on Saturday that detectives are investigating the shooting death of Timothy Wilks, 20. The incident occurred during the filming of a video for the internet in the parking lot of Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, a family entertainment business.
The police in a statement said investigators have been told Wilks and a friend tried to carry out a prank robbery for a YouTube video.
The pair, armed with butcher knives, are said to have approached a group of people to pretend to rob them, prompting one of member of the party, David Starnes Jr, 23, to draw his gun and fire.
‘Pursuit of Justice’ Leads to Extradition in 1994 Santa Ana Gang Shooting
The Orange County District Attorney’s (OCDA) office has extradited and charged a man from Guatemala in connection with the fatal shooting of a rival gang member 26 years ago.
“The pursuit of justice never ends,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a Feb. 5 press release. “No matter how long it takes or how far we have to go, we will never give up on holding someone accountable for killing another human being.”
The case dates back to Sept. 24, 1994, when 19-year-old Scott Sittler was shot in the head in Santa Ana.
