Fort McMurray child-care centres looking for more government support for COVID-19 challenges

She said her business costs about $51,000 to run each month including rent and wages. Because she runs a preschool she s not allowed to apply for wage top-ups that daycares can get from the provincial government. But she has been able to get some of the rent and wage subsidies, which have allowed her to keep her business open.  From left to right, Rob, Victoria, Ryan and Krystal Churcher. May is Child-Care Month in B C | Columbia Valley, Cranbrook, East Kootenay, Elk Valley, Kimberley, Ktunaxa Nation

Posted: May 3, 2021 May is Child-Care Month in B.C. Let’s recognize the vital work and dedication of Early Childhood Educators and all Child-Care Professionals! Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are the heart of a quality, affordable, accessible child-care system.  Child-care professionals offer young children a caring and safe environment where young children are free to create, explore, and learn. Child-care professionals teach children to share and respect themselves and each other. Every day, but especially during the month of May, we acknowledge all child-care professionals for their dedication, support, and professionalism to the children in their care and their families.

A Daycare Worker s Difficult Decision

“Trevor, it’s not outside time.” I reach for my walkie-talkie. “Guys, I need help now. Please. Hurry.” That’s when I spot Alexa across the gym, reaching up to touch the red metal fire alarm. “Alexa! Don’t do ” she doesn’t hear me and I can’t run to her, because if I move the door will close and lock out Trevor. “Don’t ” she jumps higher, her heels lifting and her hand grasping at the red box. The fire alarm rings. Five years later, that difficult day still loomed large when I pondered whether the stresses of being a daycare teacher outweigh my calling to the field. In fact, I was trying to decide whether to quit and move on to something else when the pandemic arrived in March of 2020.

From the beginning, COVID-19 has challenged us in so many ways

April 29, 2021 By Aman Singh. VICTORIA- From the beginning, COVID-19 has challenged us in so many ways. It’s been difficult for businesses, people, and communities. And for those who have lost loved ones, it has been a time of tragedy. But throughout these challenges, B.C. has been resilient. Neighbours have looked out for each other and their community members. Businesses have found creative ways to pivot their operations. And your government has helped the province to weather this storm by investing in what is most important – people. At the start of the pandemic, we moved quickly to provide supports for renters, families, hard-hit businesses, and vulnerable people in our communities. Over the last year, we have provided more supports for people and businesses per capita than any other province in Canada.
