THE UK s Covid death toll has topped 100,000 today after a surge in cases as the mutant strain spreads.
New data shows there have been 103,704 fatalities in England and Wales linked to the virus since the pandemic began.

Deaths have risen to over 100,000, according to new ONS data
The ONS today reports a total of 7,245 new deaths from the week ending January 15 which mentioned Covid-19 on death certificates.

Figure is slightly lower than Department of Health s tally of 98,531 because the ONS looks at death certificates
Only four countries, US (421,129), Brazil (217,664), India (153,587) and Mexico (150,273), suffered more deaths
Care home coronavirus deaths have nearly tripled in a fortnight, damning official figures show as the disease makes a deadly resurgence in the sector.
The UK s national statistics body found 1,705 care home residents died from the virus in the week ending January 22, up from 661 a fortnight ago.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also revealed care home residents make up almost a third of all Covid-19 fatalities.
There were 94,971 total deaths from the virus in England and Wales as of January 15, according to the ONS, 30,851 of which were in care homes (32.4 per cent).
Just 75 per cent of care home residents have been vaccinated against Covid, despite the vaccination scheme launching seven weeks ago.
Department of Health statistics show 20,089 infections were registered today, below 45,533 two weeks ago
This was also a 40 per cent drop from last Tuesday when Health chiefs announced another 33,355 cases
But amid the glimmer of hope Britain s death toll from the virus passed the grim death toll of 100,000
There were another 1,631 fatalities recorded today, bringing the total to as high as 100,162
