Editorial Roundup: New England

Editorial Roundup: New England Hearst Connecticut Media. June 4, 2021. Editorial: Declaring racism a public health crisis a bold step for CT, but there’s more to do Connecticut becomes a better state when it questions its identity. Children of color should see reflections of themselves in classrooms, in workplaces, in the ranks of public safety and in health care. Lack of representation is one of many challenges in addressing equality, which will never improve through neglect. That’s why we applaud lawmakers showing boldness by declaring racism a public health crisis in Connecticut. This bill can’t address all manifestations of racism, but health is a wise place to start. This initiative will, among other things, mandate data collection on race and ethnicity in health care; and require the public health commissioner to explore recruitment and retention programs for state health care workers who are people of color.

However, whether legally barred or simply ignored, LGBTQ-inclusive sex education is not available for most youth, especially for LGBTQ youth who are Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.

Letter to the Editor: In support of the Healthy Youth Act

To the Editor: For too long, we have left young people behind when it comes to empowering them to make their own decisions about dating and relationships. The requirements in Massachusetts that schools teach sexual education does not require the lessons to be medically accurate, age appropriate, or inclusive. That is a serious mistake. As an openly gay student at the Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover, I’ve had the experience of our sexual education classes being provided by an aggressive male gym teacher, who continued to point me out during the classes stating that for me things would be “different.” The class didn’t provide me with any information regarding what a healthy, safe relationship would look like with other men, something that many high school students think about. I found the experience embarrassing and didn’t have supportive family members who’d be willing to provide such information. We can do better.

The activist left has labeled all disagreement as bigotry, stifling the voices of those who raise concerns. fizkes/Getty Images Key Takeaways The Equality Act’s impact would be felt in a number of areas, including medicine, education, sports and parental rights. Experimental use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on children can carry serious consequences, including delayed brain development and permanent sterility. Children are not pawns to be manipulated for the sake of adult political disputes, and Americans should reject this bill’s approach to their safety and welfare.
