Experts call for urgent response to NCDs

Experts call for urgent response to NCDs Article by May 4, 2021 Leading nutrition researchers have co-authored an article that highlights the role that ultra-processed food and beverage consumption has had on nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like obesity and diabetes. The paper, which was published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in April 2021, provides evidence that healthy food policies are effective in reducing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF).In the article, the researchers call on governments to act quickly to implement effective healthy food policies, specifically recommending fiscal policies such as taxation, marketing restrictions, healthy school food policies and front-of-package warning labels (FOPWL).

Health advocates push for labelling

Social Share Front-of-package labelling is a top priority for the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) which is lobbying Government to ensure that listing of nutritional facts at the back of products, is a thing of the past. Several HCC youth advocates made that clear yesterday when they held a demonstration at the Frank Walcott building on Culloden Road, St Michael, metres away from the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI). Just after 10:30 a.m., the small group joined their colleagues in Antigua and Barbuda who simultaneously held placards and signs with messages “High in Sodium”, “High in Sugar” and “CARICOM leaders, we need warning labels now”.
