Nutritional guidelines, standards essential Healthy eating needs to be placed on the front burner. - THE EDITOR: In a Sunday Newsday commentary, “TT’s unstated food policy” (March 28), Marina Salandy-Brown drew attention to several important matters including food security, strengthening the agricultural sector, the issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the need for well-publicised national nutritional guidelines and standards. My concern here is about the writer’s call for nutritional guidelines and standards which she discussed in the context of reducing foreign food imports, stimulating agricultural production, addressing the prevalence of NCDs, and having a healthier population. Interestingly, the approach recommended was a national one requiring the collaboration of several government ministries.

PAHO, HCC, OECS, UNICEF launch regional campaign promoting Front-of-Package Warning Labelling Share this post: A ground-breaking campaign aimed at tackling the troubling issues of childhood obesity and the regional epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) was launched Friday by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), in partnership with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission and UNICEF. Titled “Now More Than Ever: Better Labels, Better Choices, Better Health”, the campaign seeks to both raise awareness of children’s right to nutritious food and to mobilize public and policymaker support for adopting octagonal warning labels on the front of packaged products to facilitate healthier food decisions. Running until 17 April 2021, it will be rolled out across social media, digital media, and radio platforms in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States.
