Sydney s coronavirus cluster grows again with five new infections

Millions of New Year s Eve revellers have been banned from Sydney Harbour and the CBD unless they have a restaurant booking amid fears the midnight celebration will become a super-spreader event. New South Wales recorded another five new local cases of coronavirus on Monday as Premier Gladys Berejiklian tightened restrictions for gatherings across Sydney. Four of the cases were linked to the hot spot suburb of Avalon, taking the cluster which emerged on 16 December to 126 after 15,000 tests on Sunday. The fifth local case is linked to a patient on the Northern Beaches whose source of infection is still under investigation. 

Man in his 70s dies after complications following COVID-19 infection

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant has confirmed a man in his 70s died on December 21 from respiratory complications following a coronavirus infection. The man was a household contact of a locally acquired case. Dr Chant said the fatality was considered to be related to the coronavirus given the man had recently returned a negative test and was no longer infectious. “I think this highlights the fact that sometimes the complications can be so severe that the lung damage and other complications arising from COVID … can subsequently be the cause of death many months later.”

Coronavirus Australia: NSW reports seven new cases

Updated Save Share NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has reported seven new cases of local transmission of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, six linked to the northern beaches after 24,000 tests were undertaken on Boxing Day. Six of the cases are linked to the Avalon cluster and the seventh case relates to a northern beaches fire fighter who visited the Belrose Hotel on December 11. Loading The Premier urged people in the northern beaches to be patient as the lockdown continued saying she would have more information on New Year s Eve restrictions tomorrow or on Tuesday at the latest. I will say something tomorrow or at the very latest the day after on what New Year s Eve looks like and also what the first couple of weeks of January looks like for everyone.
