The new Lambda COVID-19 strain has already been detected in more than 30 countries, the Health Ministry of Malaysia said on Monday, July 5.
“The Lambda strain was reported to have originated from Peru, the country with the highest mortality rate in the world,” the ministry said in a tweet on Monday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, meanwhile, said that health officials are still monitoring the COVID-19 Lambda mutation and is not yet considered as a variant of concern.

“Lambda, at this point in time, still remains a variant of interest. That does not mean that we are not following it. We are still studying it and it doesn’t warrant a classification as a variant of concern at this point in time,” Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, WHO representative to the Philippines, said in a virtual interview with ABS-CBN News on Tuesday

No new COVID-19 cases found on February 18 morning
No new COVID-19 cases were detected from 6pm on February 17 to 6am on February 18, keeping the national count at 2,329, including 1,430 community infections, reported the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.
At present, a total of 144,071 people who had close contact with confirmed COVID-19 patients or entered Vietnam from pandemic-hit regions are being under quarantine nationwide, including 577 in hospitals, 14,325 in state-designated establishments and 129,169 others at their residences.
Since January 27, when the pandemic broke out in northern localities, 737 new cases were detected in the community.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun has tested positive for Covid-19, just a day after her Cabinet colleague Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed was also announced to have tested positive.
In a statement, Rina’s office said the Women, Family and Community Development minister was confirmed to be Covid-19 positive after receiving the results of her test yesterday.
