SYDNEY, Australia – Australian authorities ordered more businesses to close Saturday along with a slew of new restrictions in the country’s largest city as a weeks-long lockdown failed to quash an outbreak of COVID-19.

Australian authorities ordered more businesses to close Saturday along with a slew of new restrictions in the country s largest city as a weeks-long lockdown failed to quash an outbreak of Covid-19.
Any retail deemed not critical would be forced to close across Sydney and its surroundings while those in hard-hit suburbs would be placed under stricter stay-at-home orders from midnight on Saturday, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian told media in Sydney.

COVID-19 infections continue to spread from a members stand at the MCG, with a 20-year-old man among 19 new locally acquired cases in Victoria.
The state s latest case numbers include at least two school students as authorities confirmed exposure sites on Saturday rose to 165 from 30 overnight.
There are more than 10,000 primary close contacts from the sites including pubs, clubs, restaurants, sporting venues, shopping centres, schools and gyms in metropolitan Melbourne, suburbs and multiple locations at Phillip Island, a two-hour drive south of Melbourne.
Reported yesterday: 19 new local cases and no new cases acquired overseas.

It s not good enough for us to tread water which is what we re doing now; we ve to some extent stabilised it, but we re not managing to quash that curve, Berejiklian said.
The City of Sydney, Australia has ordered the closure of construction sites, prohibited non-essential retail, and threatened to fine employers who let employees enter the office, as new COVID-19 cases have been rising after the city has been locked down for three weeks.
On Saturday, authorities in New South Wales, with Sydney as the capital, also banned hundreds of thousands of people in the western suburbs of the city (the most affected area) from leaving nearby communities to work because they recorded 111 new cases. The previous 24 hours was higher than 97 the previous day.
The state also recorded new deaths from the virus. Since the beginning of the year, the total number of deaths has reached 3, and the total number of deaths in the country has reached 913 since the beginning of the pandemic.
