European countries began to close their doors to travellers from the United Kingdom on Sunday, with several banning planes and trains over concerns about a new coronavirus strain that is spreading quickly through the country, Reuters reported.
Among the countries to impose a travel ban were Belgium, which said it would close its borders to flights and trains from the United Kingdom, and Italy and the Netherlands, which also ordered the suspension of flights from Britain.
“The COVID variant recently discovered in London is worrying and will need to be investigated by our scientists,” Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said.

The new coronavirus variant, which prompted the UK government to impose a Tier 4 lockdown in London and southeastern England, and tighten restrictions for all of England over the festive period, is out of control, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Sunday the same day that the UK broke its daily coronavirus case record, recording 35,928 new cases.
The ensuing wave of travel bans has cut off UK travelers from much of the continent. France said on Sunday it will halt all travel from Britain for 48 hours from midnight Sunday including journeys related to goods transport by road, air, sea or rail .
The ban on all but unaccompanied freight comes as companies are scrambling to shift merchandise across the Channel with days to go until Britain finally quits EU trade structures.
