Committee to announce closure of all non-essential businesses and services from 1 p.m. to 6 a.m. Panaji: Goa`s most popular coastal strip, the Calangute-Candolim beach stretch, which is extremely popular with beachgoers and tourists, may go for a partial lockdown, in the wake of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the area. According to Ports Minister and local MLA Michael Lobo, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant late on Tuesday (April 27), gave the go-ahead for the district administration, local elected representatives, health and police officials to meet on Wednesday (April 28) afternoon to finalise the plan for a partial lockdown of the beach villages of Candolim, Calangute, and parts of Arpora, in a bid to stem the COVID-19 tide.

Image Source: IANS News Panaji, April 26 : Saving lives is more important than economic activities, Goa s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said on Monday, stressing the need to impose a lockdown in the state in wake of a surge in Covid-19 cases. In addition to the measures, Goa definitely needs to go under lockdown on lines of the other states like Maharashtra and Karnataka for a particular period. More than economic activities, the lives of the people matter to us, he said. Rane also said that he would be pitching for a lockdown in Goa, at an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant later on Monday.

Sawant said during the night curfew only commercial vehicles transporting essential goods would be allowed to ply.  Petrol pumps, pharmacies and other essential services will remain open during the curfew hours.  While, religious places have been barred from organising mass gatherings but they can continue performing rituals with limited people. Wedding functions cannot have more than 50 guests and only up to 20 people can attend funerals. Though, casinos, bars, restaurants, river cruises, water parks, entertainment parks, cinema theatres, gyms and parlours will operate only at 50 per cent capacity. Further, the upcoming Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education for Class 10 and Class 12 has been postponed. The board will inform students about the new dates 15 days in advance.

The Goa government announced a 10-day-long night curfew in the state effective from Wednesday and imposed curbs on restaurants, cinema halls and casinos in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases. The government also announced the postponement of the upcoming 10th and 12th standard examinations of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The curfew, from 10 pm to 6 am, will come into force on Wednesday (April 21) and remain in operation till April 30, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said after chairing a high-level meeting.
