New Delhi: Assam, India was shaken on Wednesday (April 28) by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake on the Richter scale. According to the information currently available, there was an earthquake in Assam and tremors were felt in Assam, North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.
However, no loss of life or property has been reported so far.
According to the National Center of Seismology, the earthquake originated in Tezpur in Assam. According to the Center for Seismology, the earthquake was centered 43 km west of Tezpur in Assam.
The major earthquake was followed by three aftershocks, one at 8:13 am, the other at 8:25 am and then the third at 8:44 am. The three aftershocks measured 4.0, 3.6 and 3.6 on the Richter scale, respectively.
However, no damage or casualty was reported immediately.
Meanwhile, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the northeastern Indian state of Assam sending tremors to adjacent Meghalaya state and northern parts of West Bengal today, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting officials.
Initial reports spoke of widespread damages in Assam, the officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, there were no immediate reports of any death or injury in the quake, struck at a depth of 17m below the surface.
The epicentre of the quake was 43 km west of Assam s Tezpur, the Centre said.
Panicked people scampered out of their homes in many areas of Assam, reports said.
