Maldives is country experiencing a new, more dangerous strain of the Covid-19 pandemic, says Doctor at the National Center for Respiratory Medicine at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Mohamed Ali.
In a Twitter post late Friday, Dr. Mohamed revealed that ongoing is definitely a new strain which looks far more infective and affects the lungs “more vigorously”. Upon infection of the new strain patients could possibly deteriorate faster, the doctor stressed.
With this being said Dr. Mohamed has urged the public to pay more heed to Covid-19 restrictions in place including reducing contact bubbles, strictly adhering to the face mask mandate as well as maintaining hand hygiene.

COVID-19: Maldives battling a fourth wave of infections The Maldives is currently battling a fourth wave of the COVID-19 infections, the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has said.
The COVID-19 situation in the Maldives has deteriorated dramatically over the past week. The archipelago reported its highest single-day rise in daily infections on Tuesday, with 601 cases identified across the country. Out of these, 440 cases were recorded in capital Male .
Speaking at a press conference held by HOC on Tuesday night, Dr. Mohamed Ali from HEOC said while the Maldives is battling a fourth wave of infections, the number of people whose condition is severe is increasing. Noting that the ICU capacity at main government hospital Dharumavantha Hospital has reached its maximum, six patients are on ventilator support, said the doctor. While the number of active cases of Covid-19 across Maldives has risen past the 6,500-mark, Health Protection Agency (HPA) statistics show that the potentially fatal infection has thus far been detected from 72 islands in the Maldives, including residential islands, tourist resorts and islands reserved for industrial purposes.
Speaking at a press by the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) on Tuesday night, President s Office Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez revealed that the number of active cases of Covid-19 across the Maldives had increased to 6,508. The number of daily new Covid-19 infections being detected across the country had been at a record high over the past week, and had peaked on Tuesday as 601 new cases of the infection were reported.

The state of public health emergency first declared across the Maldives on 12 March 2020 amid fears of the Covid-19 pandemic has been extended until 3 June 2021.
The announcement was publicized in a press release signed by the Minister for Health Ahmed Naseem, which stated that the ministry had decided to extend the state of public health emergency, first announced on 12 March 2020 as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to 3 June 2021 as per the powers vested in them in the Public Health Protection Act (No. 7/12), under recommendations by the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru.
