As angry rioters and supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in a last stand for the outgoing president Wednesday, the violence overshadowed a deadly day across the nation as the coronavirus pandemic continued its surge.
A record 3,915 people died of covid-19 in the United States, the deadliest day of a pandemic that has claimed more than 360,000 lives across the country. A record 251,646 new coronavirus cases were reported, about 16,000 more cases than the Wednesday before, according to a Washington Post analysis. More than 132,000 are battling covid-19, the illness that can be caused by the virus, in hospital beds.

(Reuters) - The U.S. drugs regulator said on Friday genetic variants of COVID-19, including the one found in the UK, could lead to false negative results from some molecular COVID-19 tests, but the risk of the mutations affecting overall testing accuracy is low.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it has alerted lab staff and healthcare providers to the possible false negative results and has asked them to consider such results in combination with clinical observations, and use a different test if COVID-19 is still suspected. WASHINGTON - After angry rioters and supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in a last stand for the outgoing president, the United States has tallied its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic for the second straight day.
On Thursday, more than 4,000 people died of covid-19 in the United States, the first time the toll has exceeded that milestone, after a record day Wednesday of 3,915 deaths. The pandemic has now claimed more than 363,000 lives in the United States. More than 265,000 new coronavirus cases were reported, the second-highest count in a day according to a Washington Post analysis. More than 132,000 people are battling covid-19 in hospital beds, the most the nation s health-care system has taken on.
WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - Genetic variants of the novel coronavirus, including the one found in Britain, could impact the performance of some molecular Covid-19 tests and lead to false negative results, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Friday (Jan 8).
The agency has alerted clinical laboratory staff and health care providers to the possible false negative results from any molecular test, and has asked them to consider such results in combination with clinical observations, and repeat testing with a different test if Covid-19 is still suspected.
The FDA, however, said the risk that these mutations will impact overall testing accuracy is low.
As the US marked another grim milestone Thursday with more than 4,000 COVID-19 deaths reported in a single day, federal disease trackers said research suggests that people without symptoms transmit more than half of all cases.
