  TILLSOBURG, ONT. A major COVID-19 outbreak at a Tillsonburg nursing home has public health officials sound the alarm. There are now 90 confirmed cases of the virus at Maple Manor, including 55 residents and 35 staff. Four residents at the home have died. The facility houses just over 90 residents. Veronica Thurston, 21, could be seen staring through a window and waving at her grandmother from outside the residence Tuesday. It’s the only way she can see her right now. “It’s totally different,” she said as she tried to compose herself. “My grandma actually tested positive for COVID. Sorry, this is my first time coming to see her since.but it’s nice that we can still see her through the window. I love that.”

Ontario long-term care home issued order of compliance, cites inadequate senior leadership

  TORONTO An Ontario long-term care home that has been in a COVID-19 outbreak since mid-November has received an order of compliance from York Region’s medical officer of health due in part to what he describes as “inadequate senior leadership” at the institution and insufficient knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPAC) processes. The order was issued by Dr. Karim Kurji, on New Year’s Eve and requires Villa Leonardo Gambin, a long-term care home in Vaughan, Ont. operated by Sienna Senior Living, to “comply with all direction related to the COVID-19 outbreak.” An outbreak was declared at Villa Leonardo Gambin on Nov. 20. According to data available Saturday, there are 35 confirmed cases among residents and 14 among staff. Four residents have died since the outbreak was declared.

Article content After being at St. Joseph’s General Hospital for the past 14 years, hospital chief executive officer (CEO) Pierre Ozolins will be retiring early in the New Year. Ozolins, who came to Elliot Lake from British Columbia, started at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in 2006 as the chief nursing officer. Ozolins replaced Mike Hukezalie as hospital CEO on April 1, 2015, after Hukezalie retired from the position. On Friday, Dec. 11, some of the members of the hospital board and the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Elliot Lake along with some staff hosted a small ceremony outside of the hospital to wish him well on his upcoming retirement.
