New COVID strain: More contagious U K coronavirus strain found in Pa

In a race against time to get residents inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine before the deadly virus claims more lives, Pennsylvania has confirmed its first known case of a new coronavirus strain that has been ravaging the United Kingdom since December. An individual in Dauphin County was confirmed to have the new, more contagious variant of the virus, known as B.1.1.7, Health Secretary Rachel Levine announced Thursday. The individual tested positive after known international exposure, and a case investigation and contact tracing were performed to identify, inform and monitor anyone who was in close contact with the patient. Levine said this was not a case of community spread.

UK Coronavirus Variant B117 Discovered in Pennsylvania Patient – NBC10 Philadelphia

The mutations in this coronavirus variant seem to allow for easier spread. Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine said in a statement that the patient in Dauphin County tested positive after international exposure, and is well after having only mild symptoms. Contact tracers found, identified and are monitoring the patient s close contacts. Frederic Bushman, a microbiologist at Penn Medicine, told NBC10 that genetic sequencing work has shown what makes the UK variant of the virus different from other known versions. The UK variant has mutations that changed the spike protein, which the virus uses to break into human cells in an infection.
